If you have a jailbroken ps3 (runs cfw), you can run a program that is called multiman. using this homebrew program, you can rip your ps3 disc based games to your internal or external usb hard. You cannot play games from an external storage device such as a hard drive. if you want to solve your space issues, buy an internal drive, not an external one.. Yes i think internal is the way to go. i have an internal 500gig in my ps3 aswell, works well. if i need music/videos there i use an usb stick or external hdd. you could also buy an adapter from sata & sata power to double usb, im sure you can find that online..
The thing is you will still need the disc in the drive to play the games. it's possible to download/install psn ps3 games onto the hdd. so i would find it strange if it wasn't possible to download. Best answer: your friend is mistaken. yes you can copy the game data on to your harddrive, (on ps3 and 360) but on ether one without the disc you still cant play the game. the only reason to ever want to copy the game onto your harddrive is to make the load time faster, and also make it so if your disc gets.
